The opening game of the season saw Watford travel to White Hart Lane.

All but four of the 24 names on the team sheet had featured in the same fixture at the end of the previous season which had memorably resulted in a 5-1 triumph for the Hornets.

Roles were reversed here, however, with one of the new faces, Spurs debutant Chris Waddle, scoring twice and another debutant, Paul Allen, adding another. Mark Falco, who was to join Watford the following summer, was the other scorer in a comprehensive Tottenham victory.

Tottenham Hotspur 5th, as they don't like to be called.

No place in Euro again this season. Good company as same fate for Merchandise United.
