Watford boss Beppe Sannino says speculation over Troy Deeney's future has not influenced his pre-season selections

Deeney speculation not influencing Sannino's selection

Watford boss Beppe Sannino stressed speculation over Troy Deeney’s future is not the reason he hasn't started the last three friendlies and says yesterday's defeat to Coventry City was the last where all the Hornets players will be used.

The Golden Boys suffered their first pre-season defeat as the Sky Blues completed a 1-0 win at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park ground thanks to a strike from Marcus Tudgay.

All the available members of the Hornets first-team squad were used during the contest and Deeney was one of seven players brought on at half time.

The striker has been the subject of transfer bids from Premier League sides this summer but Sannino said that did not influence his decision when choosing his starting XI.

“No, no. Absolutely not,” Sannino explained. “Troy played in the second half because all of the players need to play. In the past Troy has played in the first half and today he played in the second. It is normal.”

He added: “For me this match was the last game where I will put on all of my players. It was important [all the players played] because they have worked hard.

“Against Udinese the players will play for almost 90 minutes.”

The Hornets take on Italian side Udinese on Saturday at Vicarage Road. It’s the final warm-up game for Sannino’s side before they start their Championship campaign.

The Watford head coach said the starting XI against the Little Zebras may indicate who begins the opening day clash against Bolton Wanderers on August 9.

He said: “In this moment, there was one team in the first half and one in the second half. Now I watch all the players and on Saturday you will see on the pitch the team that may start the Championship.”

Sorry, don't believe him. You don't risk a £10 million asset in a two-bit practice match. No-one will buy a 'crocked' player in the short transfer window.

I'm coming to the conclusion that it will best for the morale of the team that Deeney gets transferred the sooner the better.
We seem to be in limbo land , last night when he came on he was playing a lot of the time in midfield and wide right, with Regegie down the centre and Igahalo to his left, now these two look adequate replacement for Troy but it must be hard for them to know that what ever they do they will be down the pecking order after TD.
Also to some extent it's got to have an unsettling effect on himself not knowing if he's going or staying.
I think we all have resigned ourselves that he will go and good luck to him he's earned it, but I hope it's resolved pronto so WE as a club can all move on.

But he played a full half like most of them...is he less likely to get injured playing second half rather than first?
If he starts Saturday and plays 65+ mins then clearly a deal is not imminent. Otherwise, if we leave him out against Udinese we would show the interested clubs that we expect Deeney by leave and therefore weakening our bargaining position.

And if he scores a hat-trick, we can up the price.

I agree Saturday will be key to Sannino's plans moving forward.

Formation: he cant keep 'experimenting' what he plays v udinese id expect v Bolton

Team line up: he will start with what he expects to start with v Bolton

Subs: He wont change whole team at half time so whether he uses fabbrini, ranegie will be key to his plans for them

DEENEY: if he is likely to stay he will start Saturday and start v Bolton. If he doesn't start he is being protected.

Recent deeney selections make little sense though, you'd expect him to be main man if staying while not be used if they are planning to sell. He has played less than can be expected our number 1 striker, but he has not been completely wrapped in cotton wool and hidden away altogether either!

The selection seems to make some sense at least to me.

Clearly there is a (strong?) possibility Deeny will go but equally he may end up staying. If he stays we'll need him to be match fit so he has to play at least some part in the practice games. Equally, the club has to plan for the possibility that he will leave and experiment with other options.

Ultimately the manager knows exactly what Deeney can do up top but he's possibly unsure in terms of next best options. That maybe explains why it has sometimes been Deeney that has been shunted about a bit.

As has been suggested, Saturday should provide a decent indication of whether the club think he's more likely to go or stay as there is likely to be much less experimentation.

Yes tell Bolton who is playing on the 9th. Let them plan really well. And then let them laugh when Troy is playing wide right and Vydra wide left.

Playing Deeney on the wing gave him a run-out, kept him out of trouble, and also didn't give any clues to interested parties as to how well he is doing.

We would be peeved if he scored a hat-trick and had everyone raving about him!!
Patience guys - he's saving it for Bolton!!

I feel Very sorry for Troy as he is in the middle of a situation do the club
want him to STAY or NOT and as a supporter not knowing the whole
situation it is very frustrating and my only hope is that is sorted out as
quickly as possible before it upsets the Team morale
My own feelings are the window should shut earlier before the Season
start's so the team can settle down into the season
More information to the fans is I feel very important !

I have mixed emotions for the start of this season. Last season it was clear that our defence was not good enough, abdi was a big miss and we had a lack of pace without vydra.
For me Sannino has got some things right so far pre season with working on player fitness levels and for changing our shape to four at the back.
Looking back two years ago, it doesn't take a tactical genius to work out that our success was based on Vydra's and Deeney's goals. The two of them playing as a 'pair' was a joy to watch and needs to be replicated this season. As others have mentioned, Vydra is not a target man and he works best when playing off someone who can control the ball well and provide flick on passes to showcase Vydra's speed and agility.
Personally I believe the 433 system is a very good match for the majority of the team as dyer and anya out wide will be any full backs worse nightmare. That said, playing this formation doesn't utilise our main weapon of playing Vydra off another striker.
442 gives us four at the back, two wingers (dyer/abdi) with pace and skill and a strike set up that almost won promotion two years ago.

I don't think I've overestimated our potential and with the right tactics, support and effort, there is no reason why 2014/15 won't be yellow!!

Come on Beppe!!
