Watford defender Reece Brown has joined League One side Barnsley for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old defender, who joined the Hornets from Manchester United last summer, spent the final months of last season out on loan at Carlisle United but could not prevent the Cumbrians’ slide into League Two.

Brown made just three appearances for the Golden Boys last season and last week joined the Tykes on a trial, featuring in the 1-1 draw with Hull City at Oakwell.

His only league appearance for the club came as a second-half substitute in the 3-3 draw at Reading last August.

The Manchester-born centre-half joined Watford on a two-year deal having previously gained Football League experience on loan at Bradford City, Oldham Athletic, Doncaster Rovers and Ipswich Town.

At least another player off of the wage bill that would not have featured in the new squad. That said, he probably has a family so I hope he finds a better place.

The only possible reason I can think that we'd sell him is if they offered a good price... I assumed we signed Brown not as a 1st team player, but as a future player who could be integrated into the team later - and maybe loaned out for experience in the meantime.

It's very rare to find a center back who knows his stuff at 21... More so than other positions, defenders need a bit of experience that comes with age to do well. I would have happily kept hold of him, but if he went for a good price and he isn't in our plans for the near future, good luck to him and I'm happy he's off our wage bill.

He was not brilliant, but he was a useful squad player, and Beppe has used him a lot in our pre-season friendlies.

Also another "Brit" gone from the squad, and when the injuries and suspensions dig in, we will struggle to meet the new rule of nine home grown players in every match day squad!

To be fair he tried and it didn't work out so good luck to him.

Also it's not bad business to sign a player on a free and move him on for a fee...as long as we made a profit of some description I'm happy!

Remember it is about finding diamonds in the rough. For each Anya , released by Wycombe and if he was sold for less than 2 million people on here would be complaining, you will have a have a dozen punts on players who don't come off. Good luck to Reece at his new club.

Don't know why but I always thought Brown was much older. At 22, and with regular game-time, he still has time to develop and become a good player. I wish him well.
