Jenkins still searching for club after unsuccessful Southend trial

First published in Sport by

Former Hornet Ross Jenkins has been on trial at Southend United but will not be offered a contract by Shrimpers boss Phil Brown.

The 23-year-old midfielder has been without a club since being released by Watford at the end of last season.

Jenkins struggled with injuries during his last two years at Vicarage Road. He failed to make a single appearance in the previous campaign and had an unsuccessful trial at Leyton Orient.

A pelvis injury meant he was unable to go out on loan last season. His last competitive game came for Barnet against AFC Wimbledon on April 1, 2013.

Prior to his departure, Jenkins made 78 starts and 17 substitute appearances for Watford.

Good luck to the lad.
Unfortunately injury-prone in recent years, prior to that played well in midfield, under Malky I believe, or was it Brendon?

Bit harsh mate, he isnt Championship standard but I have seen worse midfielders play for us.

I feel sorry for the young man, as he was a decent player for us a few seasons back.

However, the writing is on the wall if teams like Southend are rejecting him. Too injury prone I guess.

Would certainly do a good job at Blackpool with their lack of players!

I wish Ross well. A decent journeyman, who was just lacking a bit at Championship level. 5 years back he would have walked into a lower league club.

Players like him - there must be 100s if - who are suffering from the greater influx of overseas players that has cascaded down from the Premier League, to the Championship etc. As we get this influx of on the whole better players (like us), British lads who would have played in the Championship regularly play in Divs 1 & 2 and those who would have played in Divs 1 or 2 now in the conference.

The changing face of football...

Get yourself down to wealdstone lad. Get some games in, then who knows....you may start to climb back up. Good luck to him. Always thought he did well in his first season. Never managed to kick on from there.

Should be able to make a career in non league, but when you cant get games at Barnet in league 2, who were then subsequently relegated, the writings on the wall. I think Liam Henderson found his level at Spennymoor.

At last the comments have stopped kicking Ross in the nads when he is down.

I agree the first priority is to get a contract - if I were him I would have been on the blower to Blackpool or any club that had a clear out of over paid players (relegated clubs typically) and strike a one year deal.

Good luck Ross.

Personally I think it is quite sad. A young man, who a few years ago thought all his dreams of being a top footballer were starting to come true, and now they are beginning to crumble in front of him. He must have great fortitude to continue and I wish him all the best. When he broke in to our first team, he played an important part in securing our championship place. If we had got relegated, I doubt we would have the owners we now have and the bright future before us. So, Ross will no longer be part of our future, but he will always be part of our story.

Very unlucky with his injuries and I wish him all the best. I agree with comments that he should drop down a few leagues and try to climb back up. Forest Green Rovers in the Conference would be a good move as they have Eddie Oshodi and Al Bangura and I believe have an ex-Watford youth team coach in their coaching set up

Yes, FGR sounds ideal with the WFC connections, go for it Ross, be positive and here's hoping you do well.
Come to think of it, nice location too, in the Cotswolds, now where are my boots and, can you still buy Dubbin......?!
