Tring Athletic began their new campaign in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against London Colney.

The game got off to a scrappy start, with both sides struggling to maintain any sort of rhythm when in possession.

But Tring managed to break the deadlock in first half injury time when Chris Vardy squeezed the ball home from a tight angle after being picked out with a fine dinked cross from Stewart King.

Athletic almost consolidated their lead after the break as neat interplay from midfield freed Ryan Sturges but he was deemed to be offside.

Moments later, London Colney equalised when they broke down the left and Russell Gallagher converted the incoming cross.

The hosts were on the front foot and looked the more dangerous side in the final stages. But Athletic, led by captain Chris Salmon, held onto the draw to come home with a point.
