Beppe Sannino believes clubs like Stevenage have extra motivation when facing sides from higher divisions - such as Watford - and says the Hornets fans had to be happy after his side's 1-0 Capital One Cup win against Boro.

A 52nd minute goal from Lloyd Dyer secured the Golden Boys’ place in the second round draw, which takes place tomorrow.

The Hornets were not at their best at Broadhall Way while Stevenage’s battling display went unrewarded.

Speaking after the game, Sannino said: “I am very happy with the result because we are into the next round of the competition. The players played well in the second half. In the first half, after 20 minutes, we didn’t play our football.

“In the second half I saw a team with spirit and motivation. We have to enjoy the win and we carry on in this competition.”

He continued: “When we play against a team like Stevenage they have more motivation when they play sides from a higher division.

“What is important was to win the match. We have done that and I am pleased. Our fans have to be happy.”

Jonathan Bond produced an outstanding reaction stop to keep the Hornets in front in the second half.

The goalkeeper managed to tip a point-blank half volley from Darius Charles over the bar and Sannino described the save as “amazing”.

He said: “This situation happens in football. You can score in many situations but sometimes in football you can lose a match in one situation. Bond produced an amazing save, it was very, very good.”
