Watford are set to receive £225,000 after former winger Will Buckley joined Sunderland from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Buckley has joined the Black Cats for a reported £2.5m fee which would net the Hornets £225,000.

The 24-year-old spent three seasons with Brighton after he left Watford in 2011 in a £1m move.

When the winger, who made 43 appearances for the Hornets in a two-year spell, departed from Vicarage Road the club negotiated a 15 per cent sell-on clause on any transfer over the £1m fee.

Buckley has signed a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light and is reunited with former Seagulls boss Gus Poyet.

It's the second time this summer the Hornets have netted a cash windfall from the sale of one of their former players.

Last week Britt Assombalonga completed a move to Nottingham Forest with the fee believed to be £5.5 million.

If that figure is correct, Watford were due £2.15m  from Peterborough in addition to the £1.2m the Golden Boys initially received for the young striker.

Like to point out this is the result of our previous recruitment system from Ross Wilson and John Stephenson.
We've yet to see the Pozzo transfer system work in our (financial) favour.

Before the boo boys come along, I fully support the pozzos and the current management, just pointing out that the profits we've made have been the result of previous hard graft when we didnt have a pot to **** in.

erm.......didn't the Pozzo's negotiate the deal that sold BA to Peterborough?

Yes, he was recruited under the previous regime but the additional 2m we just received was entirely down to the deal negotiated with Posh.

The Assambolonga deal was negotiated last year when the Pozzo's were in charge! As far as the Buckley deal goes. The £1m we sold him for was poor it should have been double that. That is one of the many positive differences between the previous regime and the Pozzo's!

So the fact we have players like forestieri angella anya abdi dyer fabbrini parades etc etc etc all for nothing doesn't show the pozzos transfer system working in our financial favour then? Come on man seriously.

Between them, Belkalem, Assombalonga and Buckley have pretty much paid for the new stand. I think that's definitely a good feeling for the Pozzos. A big investment in the club's future has already been repaid, and our squad hasn't really suffered for it to be so.

I agree. Unstoppable and a joy to watch at his best, but with us was not often enough at his best. A bit of a luxury player at times, and in fact too often, but fantastic when on his game.
maybe with a bit more experience he is gaining more consistency now.

I know you were meant to be recognising what our previous recruitment staff achieved rather than knocking the pozzo's and your comments may have be taken the wrong way by a few.
However, I would say getting Belkalem in on a free and then loaning him out for 400,000 euros with a right to buy at £2M is quite a good bit of business as well.

Will Buckley is like Shakin Stevens to John Barnes's Elvis. Wearing gloves doesn't elevate WB to a Watford legend any more than imitating Elvis's dancing makes Shaky the King. As for men in tights Andy, each to their own. I'm happy to admit to Longjohns on a freezing midwinter day in the Rookery. Unsexy but only my wife will see. And anyway I'm not running round getting sweaty. If I did, then I wouldn't wear gloves, longjohns or indeed tights.
