Watford faced their first game in the newly-formed fourth division, having finished 16th the previous season in the final third division (south) table.
The opposition was provided by Southport, one of 11 new league opponents in the first season in which the club would face regular northern opposition.
Watford triumphed 5-1, with Peter Walker scoring twice.
