Watford looking for another left back to compete with Daniel Pudil

The Golden Boys are hoping to add a new left back to their squad, the Watford Observer understands.

Daniel Pudil is the only 'specialist' left back in the squad and young centre half Tommie Hoban filled in their admirably on Tuesday night at Rotherham United, when the 20-year-old created the second goal.

But the club have recently decided they would like to sign another left back to compete with Pudil.

Watford are also still looking to add another centre midfielder and goalkeeper to their squad, as previously reported.

I agree that we need a Left back to challenge Pudil but we also need to reduce the overall squad size, just too many players and the discontent appears to have started already!

Signing of a 'specialist left back' seems to me to be saying that Dyer is either not going to be very high in the pecking order in a 3-5-2, or that there is a real possibility we may be playing a lot of games with 4 at the back, hence the need for a left back to cover for pudil, who is our only left back. Dyer on the other hand if we assume is playing as a left sided player in a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 has cover in Anya who in turn has cover by Paredes, who in turn can be covered by Doyley.

Either way I think that signing is a left back is smart, and if it paved the way for 4 at the back even better. If not no worries, but that would add another play to the squad who is guaranteed some rotation, along with basically ever other play in the squad bar Gomes (Deeney and Vydra taking an occasional sub at 70+ minutes).

So all I would add is irrespective of the supposed 'managerial problem' which I wouldn't want to speculate on, that we have a seriously large squad, too large realistically. Players do not and cannot mind some rotation. However when we haven't even been fitting Murray, Battachio or Ranegie on the bench I think that is a serious indicator that a large number of our younger squad need to be sent out on loan.

Not criticising as I love the depth of players we have but on the books we currently have ...

Deeney, Vydra, Ranegie, Forrestieri, Fabbrini and Igalho. We then also have Mensah, Jubiak and Ikpeazu on the outskirts but still on proffesional contracts. That is 9 strikers. Seems a little over the top to me.

Nothing wrong with a squad that's too large at this stage of the season. It allows the manager to see how best to use the players at his disposal, and already some of the absences have been through niggling injury. And his explanation of the Rotherham changes was perfectly rational.

The fact that we are looking for cover for Pudil suggests that Beppe is coming round to four at the back, perhaps in a 4-1-3-2 formation, which should be good news for Dyer, and could explain why clubs are sniffing round McGugan.

How can we possibly think of adding yet another first team challenger to our already very overcrowded squad!

Beppe cannot even cope with 25 first teamers it seems, if Frank Smith is correct.

Def time now to ship out a few on loan.

We have the best squad ever together at the Mighty Vic, so please do not ruin it with even more signings and even more unhappy squad members.

We have versatile players such as Doyley, Hoban, Anya and Dyer who can play this wing back role, so please.....no more signings!

Pudil gives his all, but he does lack quality at times. particularly going forward. Rarely beats his man. IMO this is the only weakness in the squad and although Hoban may have played a blinder Tuesday its not his natural position.

Dyer's ability going forward is not in question. not totally convinced yet by Anya, defending not his strongest point. Doyley? Hates receiving the ball, enough said.

The Pozzos are right to focus on our ability to defend as it has cost us promotion for two seasons. It is easier to establish the squad you want early in the season and then trim it rather than do it the other way round. Managing players expectations is Sannino's problem for which I am sure he is well rewarded.

IMO strongest squad since the Blissett/Barnes days, lets not waste the opportunity. Pretty sure Forest will blow up at some stage, probably co-inciding with any loss of form of B.A. Norwich seem to be the team to watch, and just waiting for Tan to do something daft at Cardiff to rock the boat. He wont keep quiet for long.

Predict a comfortable win against Leeds, we have too much going forward for them. Lets really turn the screw, and not sit back when we have a healthy lead.

Top 2 place by Saturday night, and then its ours to lose.

Agreed we need another left back and it would be good to have players giving it their all to compete for spots in the 1st team...

But seriously our squad is just way too big, there's already signs of players being unsettled and we just have a number of pointless players that won't make the bench. We need to offload the players that just aren't being played

I think we should utilies Dyer, Doyley and Hoban as cover for left back which all 3 are capable of before adding to the squad size. As said Hoban did a cracking job and Dyer has been used iin this position before so why add to the wage bill and squad at this stage, come Christmas will tell you where to add and cut back.

Battocchio, Abdi, Tozser, Murray, McGugan, Andrews, Munari, Dyer, and Connor Smith (no he won't play of course)
