Rotation reason for Lloyd Dyer and Lewis McGugan's absence according to Watford boss Beppe Sannino

Beppe Sannino suggested Lloyd Dyer and Lewis McGugan’s exclusion from Watford’s squad this afternoon was simply down to their large squad but would not state explicitly that Dyer’s angry celebration on Tuesday wasn’t a factor.

Dyer had been one of the Hornets’ best players after coming on a substitute in the two matches prior to today’s 4-1 victory over Leeds United. Whilst McGugan was a regular starter until this week but has since been left out of both squads – this afternoon’s and Tuesday’s at Rotherham United.

We understand there were disagreements between Sannino and some of the club’s senior players this week.

Dyer, who has yet to start a Championship game for Watford since joining from Leicester City, marked his goal on Tuesday night by running halfway across the pitch and shouting angrily at Sannino.

Both Dyer and McGugan were left out of the 18-man squad this afternoon and watched on from the Graham Taylor Stand.

Today’s post-match press conference started with head of medical Marco Cesarini stating Sannino would be answering questions in Italian and would be translated by Cesarini to avoid any misunderstanding – the first time that has been the case this season.

On Dyer and McGugan’s exclusion, Sannino said: “I am rotating and my picks are based on what I see during the week. You could ask me the same question about two different players not involved today because I have a large squad. Every game I have to leave players out.”

When asked he would confirm that Dyer’s celebration at Rotherham had nothing to do with his absence in the 18-man squad, Sannino replied: “I did not see the celebration. But this belongs to the past and I don’t want to talk about that.

“We have two games on Tuesday and Saturday and I need all my players.”

Earlier this week we reported that several senior players were unhappy with Sannino and his style of management, and it was partly why the head coach’s future is in doubt.

It was put to Sannino this evening that the resounding win over Leeds was needed due to the speculation of player unrest this week.

Via Cesarini, Sannino said: “I am sorry; I would like to only speak about the game today. It has been two or three days where there have been a lot of rumours. But this was a situation [sic] but I can’t, I don’t want to, comment because anything [sic] true.”

When asked to clarify the final sentence of his quote, Cesarini just said: “It was a situation. I would like to speak about the game today.”

Watford were eventually convincing winners this afternoon but the score was 1-1 when Leeds were reduced to ten men with 33 minutes remaining, which led to Troy Deeney putting his side in front from the penalty spot.

Fernando Forestieri made it 3-1 with a fine solo effort on 67 minutes and then Daniel Tozser added a fourth goal in injury-time, moments before Leeds were reduced to nine men.

Sannino said: “The result was fair today even if it [the winning margin] was too large today. Leeds are a good team and they played well first half.

“The goal we conceded was an own goal and I was happy with our performance.”

Forestieri was the star of the show with two goals and an excellent display, in what was his first start in the Championship this season.

Sannino said: “Maybe nobody was expecting he would start the game but I have a group of very good players and very good people and I need to rotate because I want to see all my players on the pitch.”

He clarified: “Starting Forestieri was not a late decision and the starting XI was clear in my mind.”

Vydra has been in the line-up ahead of Forestieri for the previous Championship matches.

He suffered a dead leg on Tuesday night and was a doubt for today’s contest.

The Czech Republic international was on the bench against Leeds and Sannino was asked if the striker was 100 per cent fit.

He responded: “For this game I selected the two strikers who could be more powerful for this game.

“Don’t forget we have five strikers and you know Vydra used to always play here in the past. Because I have five strikers, I have to rotate them and I choose based on the opposition I have to face. Today Forestieri was very good.”

Sannino stated on several occasions that he currently plans to rotate his players, whereas last season he would often play a similar XI each week.

The Italian explained: “In August, since the start of the season, we have to play seven games in 20 days and in this particular moment we have to rotate the players. When the matches are just every Saturday then we may make other decisions because we have more time to recover.”

Sannino was also asked about Leeds’ second red card. United boss Dave Hockaday claims he didn’t see the incident but stated he was told there had been no contact when Daniel Pudil went down clutching his face following an alleged head-butt by Sam Byram.

Sannino said: “I was looking at the ball and I didn’t see but it was the linesman who called the referee over so I think he saw something.”

“I haven’t asked Daniel about it,” he added.

Not quite sure what to make of these comments by Beppe. We need a team/squad that is 100% behind the manager and a unified dressing room. Beppe seems to be a volatile character who perhaps doesn't have the personnel management skills and communication skills to keep such a large squad happy. I'm certainly unsure whether Beppe will still be our manager by next weekend. Without doubt there are other managers out there with more experience of getting teams promoted from the Championship and better personnel management skills than Sannino. It only really matters though what Gino Pozzo, Nani and Duxbury make of his management. They're unlikely to sack him unless they have someone else lined up who in their view would be better.

Glad to see that Frank Smith managed to hide under a table and listen in on the press conference after the game. If it came to a boxing match between Beppe and Frank I could only see one winner. Journalists are in a privileged position. Never forget that. The key is to know when to run a story and when to leave it and move on. I hope you realise that time is now.

We have a big squad and there is pretty much two teams within that squad to be proud of. Lloyd Dyer hasn't been at the club long enough to react like that, so unprofessional. He is a good player, but he wouldn't be here if Leicester offered him a longer deal, and why didn't they? Look who else was on the bench with him at Rotherham!!!
I am not a massive fan of McGugan either, he's a bit of a luxury, I find him frustrating, then he'll do something pretty good, and then all is forgiven.
If these are the two players causing issues and spitting their dummies out, then sod them, let them play in the reserves.
There is probably more to these stirring stories than we know about, but until some of the players come out with it in a professional way or the WO have the bottle to run it, then I am 100% behind Sannino!!!
Every story seems to reference his job on the line or unrest between players and manager, and it's getting boring.
Dyer and McGugan can do one for all I care them maybe the team can concentrate on doing one better and topping then league.
Well done Sannino on a job well done so far!

"Frank Smiths reign as the Watford Observers Deputy Group Sports Editor is in serious doubt; with the Englishman today refusing to state whether he believes he has lost the support of the Watford Observer readers."
It was reported last night that hundreds of supporters are unhappy with the journalist for penning negative articles about Watford FC in an effort to destabilise the club and ultimately get the manager sacked.

We understand Smiths underhanded and cowardly behaviour around the newsroom has upset a number of the senior journalists and they are unhappy with the way he communicates his views to the public.

Beppe isn't my first choice to be the gaffa but because of just that reason you can't just want to get rid of him like some insist on this poorly club supported site!
All the tweets of anti Beppe and why Dyer not playing was laughable!
If I abused my boss in public I'd get the sack! I have no loyalties to a player that airs his grievances in public that harm our club just because he isn't playing... He isn't the only one!
Dyer has a good contract and is getting paid handsomely, he should knuckle down and take a leaf out of Fessi's and Hoban's book on how to behave!
As a boss you must stamp your authority and if that means Dyer and McGugan leave because they would rather moan and b1tch then work hard then fine let them go!
We have 46 league games plus maybe 8/10 cup games depending on draws etc etc so there is plenty of time for players to play there way into the starting 11 or in the squad on match days plus there will always be suspensions and injuries... Look at Hoban for example, now he's a certainty for the main games as he's took his opportunity!
To have all this rubbish after only a few games is a joke and the WO's continuous wanting of stirring it all up instead of letting it go is poor!
Beppe wants to move on so let's move on! after all we have won 4 out of 5 games and look really good compared to most of our other promotion candidates!
Let's get behind Beppe and show the players who play our support!

Comments about Dyer giving up a year in the Premiership to come here. Lets be clear he would have got very little / if any game time at Leicester, hence his 1 year offer (he was told club policy) whilst another player at the club over 30 got a longer contract. If I recall he was regularly on the bench last season as well. At home we play 3-5-2, where does Dyer fit start in that formation?...he doesn't, especially when interviewed states that he is a winger (not wing back). Away from home he may have more chance of playing if/when we adopt a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3. He should just knuckle down and get on with it. Nobody has the right to play without earning it.

Sannino's got an incredibly difficult job on his hands, satisfying the egos of so many quality players. I think we need to let him get on with it. Dyer really needed to keep his own emotions in check. If any of us had reacted like that to our employers, we'd have been disciplined and in the same way if any sub-ordinate behaved towards us in that way, we'd expect to have it out with them.

As for Frank Smith, well if I was Anthony Matthews I'd be having words. Get off the pot, if there's any substance to your story then reveal it....

This is what is wrong with social media. A rumour starts and the anti-fans quickly jump on the bandwagon, not knowing the source of the rumour. Say it enough times and some think is fact. 4 wins out of 5,, 2nd in the league, what more can we ask? If there is a problem, let the manager sort it out in his own way. Also get the club to say they back him. I was concerned at the end of last season, but at the moment he seems to be going in the right direction, let us all reserve serious comment until at least 12 games are concluded. I recall that a long time ago Oliver Phillips was "persona non grata" at the club, so please WO if you cannot have real support for your comments, then please stop trying to destabilise what is, in my view, the best squad of players WFC have had.

On a different subject, please get Shorty back as the announcer.

I bet Dyer is really glad he gave up a year in the prem for three at the Tower of Babel , where you have a ranting coach that no one has a clue what he's ranting about.

Agree about McGugan. Capable of the brilliant but not enough quality in the rest of his game. And remember he was not a regular starter for Forest in his final two seasons there.

Report in the paper that Mr Dyche wants him at Burnley. They are desperate for more quality but don't have the big bucks. £1.5M was quoted. I'd be happy with that !

Well we will see if Dyer and McGugan will play on Tuesday night. I have faith in Kick it out and Trevor Philips team will be watching this episode closely as discrimination is a thing of the past and not welcome in our country. And hope it is ruled out. Dyer has a right to celebrate how he did he was pumped up and celebrating by proving he had a case to show he should be starting every on Tue night and every game. Dyer is premiership class and could be playing for leicester if they had given him a 3 year deal like we did. If they did he would no way come to us and would be a starter in the premier league for them this season.

Look at Paul Elliot he resigned from Charlton last season for racially abusing a black man and now he has been employed in a new job as an anti discrimination director. So Malky deseves a second chance.

We dont know that and nor do you. There appeared to be a lot of anger on Tuesday night so it is possible that there are some underlying issues there. He had not started a championship game and since Tuesdays game McGugan is also not even in the squad. Both parties need to sit down and discuss this matter and show each other some repect. Kick it out are doin a great job and there is a number on the screen during the game to report any offensive comments made during the game.

The racism debate is absolute nonsense. I am a non-white supporter and don't buy this racism argument one iota. Dyer reacted the way he did because he though he had a god given right to start the game, Sennini saw it differently. Whether you agree with Dyer or not, no player has the right to pick the team and Senninin had no choice but to drop him. If he didn't then he would be left with little credibility and would not survive this side of Xmas.

Let's get behind OUR manager and the players he selects and we might just get promotion.

Sorry I'm a bit confused. You allude in your previous post that Beppe's issue with Dyer and McGugan is racial. I have seen no evidence that this is the case. Indeed If Sannino is racist why make Troy captain?

And in this post you state that Malky is class, yet he has admitted to sending racist texts and you forgive him because Paul Elliot has resigned from Charlton for the same reason. And Malky deserves a second chance (which imo he does). but there is a massive contridiction in your arguments. Malky deserves a second chance and what about Beppe?

Not sure what Lloyd said on Tuesday, but a poster has suggested it involved the C word. If true that is not acceptable, try going into your boss on Tuesday and using that word... a P45 would be on its way. I hope Beppe has more class and resolves the situation with Dyer even if it involves two sets of boxing gloves.

You are right Dyer is a strong Championship player, but Premiership clubs were hardly queueing up for his signature after Leicester offered a one year contract. If they had, do you seriously believe he would at the Vic?

Dyer could be a big player for us and I hope this situation is resolved. But no player is/was bigger than the club (neither is any manager or owner).

We have what we have

A manager who wears his heart on his sleeve and who may need to modify his approach with some players
4 wins out of 5
let's enjoy it and forget what Frank Smith may or may not be saying

Our most successful and respected manager, the great GT, was apparently a disciplinarian. There is no way he would have accepted the outburst from Dyer. I don't care how good Dyer may be, or McGugan, who I have heard is ring leader in the behind the scenes issues, they should respect the Manager. Player power has gone too far now and respect has gone out the window. I have reserved judgement on Beppe, and am still not sure about him, but he is our head coach, we have won 4 out of our first 5, conceded one own goal in those 4, and played 88 mins go the otter with 10 men. He has managed rotation well, resting Abdi and Toszer for Rotherham just 3 days after they played in the 10 Man Norwich game. None of us know their condition that day yet many keyboard warriors were happy to comment on that team selection. Let's just get behind the manager and team until we have a reason to question it!
Our most successful and respected manager, the great GT, was apparently a disciplinarian. There is no way he would have accepted the outburst from Dyer. Should have said 'in the other'. Not sure where 'go the otter' came from!

Totally agree. If honest, none are 100% sure about Beppe. Then again I wasn't sure about our second most successful manager (after GT) - Aidy, but he proved me and many others wrong.

One thing Beppe has, is passion and because his playing career was less than mediocre or non existent - like Fergie, Wenger and Jose Mouriniho, he has something to prove - not just to the owners, us, but more importantly to himself.

Will it work. Who Knows. Lets give 110% support and see where we end up. Clown no, unproven at this moment, yes.

Dyer is premiership class and could be playing for leicester if they had given him a 3 year deal like we did. If they did he would no way come to us and would be a starter in the premier league for them this season.
Maybe take a moment out of your day to ask why Leicester didn't offer this Premier League star performer a three year contract. I could help if you're truly struggling but I'm sure you'll get there. Start with he's not a Premier League player and wasn't good enough to start regularly for the relegation favourites..... Oops probably given too much away but I'd suggest you're probably not the brightest bulb in the box

More rumours are circulating this week about Frank Smiths position at the watford observer after his failed hatchet job on Beppe Sannino. It turned out only a small number of players were involved in Smith's allegations and they were themselves players of questionable temperament. Despite intense pressure Sannino was able to rally the troops, spurred on by the public support of Watfords brightest home grown talent Tommie Hoban. Sannino coaxed a breath taking man of the match performance out of erratic striker Fernando Forestieri and the hornets thrashed Leeds 4-1. After 5 games, no opposition player has scored against Watford when they have had 11 on the pitch. Sannino was briefed to tighten up the defence over the summer and this is exactly what he has done. Frank Smith has resorted to childish personal attacks on Sannino to the extent that he even put a picture of Sannino with his tongue stuck out on the Watford Observer website to try to undermine the man tasked with leading the towns local team to promotion. Frank Smith's misguided and botched attempts to use his position at the WO to destabilise the local football club has led many to speculate that his position at the paper is now untenable. Some are asking if it is a case of when not if he steps down from the position he has abused so badly.
No opposition player has scored when we had ten men on the pitch. Also no team other than one in yellow has scored against us. Haven't lost when the floodlights are on, Also haven't lost when Jupiter is aligned with Mars

Absolute piffle!

Another rumour you are trying to start?

Frank Smith has been a great reporter on WFC for the Wobby these past few years, and in the main has been very balanced and accurate with his journalism.

Even in his latest piece last week, he has been proven correct re unhappy players, notably Dyer, McGugan, and Battochio ( and maybe a few more yet un-named)?

It is probably just a storm in a teacup, and hopefully it can all be resolved over a beer or two!

It will be a tremendous shame to rock the boat on this fabulously talented squad (even if it is too large), and probably the best ever assembled at the Mighty Vic!

I agree with some previous comments, we are second in the league lets get behind the manager and the team, fair play to him for picking a winning side on Saturday. If people think Dyer and McGugan should start then who are you going to drop, it was a decent team performance. No player is bigger than the club, so my advice to those players is knuckle down and see what happens.I will be very happy if we are still second at the end of the season.

Bang on Poppet .
It should not concern us who said what and what said who .That school yard behaviour should be kept between the manager and the players.

However what does concern is when to players and manager are unable to function ,because of breakdown in their working relationship. As this is (after the Leeds game) is clearly not the case , I suggest we get behind All of the players and the manager and let them do their jobs .COYH

Any suggestion of racism by Beppe is so ridiculous that it is laughable and those accusations should have no place on this site.

You've lost me here. When did Dyer and McGugan not playing become a racist issue? Some people appear to be reading far too much into this.
And Troy Deeney, why is he still playing? Gomes, why is he still playing? Abdi, why is he still playing? Anya, why is he still playing? God, we're such a racist club! I can't understand why Kick it out let us continue in the league.
They are all playing because they are decent players and I dont think we are a rasist club. Far from it. Dont know what your point is here. I was just saying I think dyer should be starting. McGugan is just a squad player so nit surprised he has been left out of the squad. Come on u Horns!! Get behind the managwr we had a great win yesterday so show some faith in him!!! Get behind the managwr we had a great win yesterday so show some faith in him!!! To many negative comments on here..... Cuthbert007

My point was that you appeared to suggest they weren't being picked on some racist grounds (kick it out, etc.) If that was not your point then I accept that. I suggest that we simply do what we should do and get behind whichever 11 are selected to take us forward.
