Watford have re-signed former goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin on a one-year contract.

Gilmartin was seen around the tunnel area at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon and the deal was concluded during the last two days.

The 27-year-old spent two years on the Hornets’ books between 2010 and 2012 after joining on a free transfer from Walsall.

He made four cup appearances for the Golden Boys during his first year at Vicarage Road and made another outing in the Capital One Cup the following season before replacing Scott Loach as Sean Dyche’s number one for two Championship matches.

But he was unable to cement the position and, with Loach returning to the starting XI, Gilmartin was loaned out to Yeovil Town and Crawley Town, making eight and seven appearances for the respective clubs.

Gilmartin joined Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2012 and made 16 outings for the League Two side.

The Irishman was number one between November and late January but was replaced by Jake Cole and left the club by mutual consent the following summer after being placed on the transfer list following the re-signing of Luke McCormick.

Gilmartin joined League of Ireland side St Patrick’s but was again second choice behind Brendan Clarke.

He made ten outings for St Pats, with most coming in cup competitions.

Gilmartin’s arrival is likely to lead to Jonathan Bond being loaned out as the club are keen for the England Under-21 international to play regular first team football.

Gilmartin is from Malahide in Dublin and moved over to England to join Walsall nine years ago.

He spent most of his time at Walsall as understudy to Clayton Ince but finally dislodged the Trinidad and Tobago international during the 2009/10 campaign. The goalkeeper also had loan spells at Hednesford Town and Worcester City in 2007.

Gilmartin looked set to be Walsall's number one the following season but rejected their contract offer, with the goalkeeper admitting "I valued myself at a bit more than the deal they offered me”.

He is a charismatic individual who was a big personality around the club during his first spell at Vicarage Road.
