Saturday, August 27, 1983
Watford entertained Coventry City at Vicarage Road in the first game of the 1983/84 season.
Goals from John Barnes and Richard Jobson couldn't prevent a 3-2 defeat.
The club had lost three senior strikers - Luther Blissett, Ross Jenkins and Gerry Armstrong - over the close season and had signed the first of the new guard, George Reilly, three days earlier; he was to debut the following Tuesday.
The day also saw the opening of the Family Terrace, funded by a campaign the previous season that had included manager Graham Taylor running the London Marathon.
