Watford signed Nathan Ellington from West Bromwich Albion for a club record £3.25m that had the potential to rise by a further million pounds, dependent on appearances.
Baggies manager Tony Mowbray conceded this his club were "getting an excellent fee for his services".
The former Wigan Athletic striker proved a disappointment at Vicarage Road. After initially failing to break into the side as Marlon King and Darius Henderson scored freely, he subsequently failed to make a consistent impact after King was sold and was loaned to Derby County for a season in the summer of 2008.
