Watford close to agreeing new contract with Deeney

The Hornets are close to agreeing a new contract with their captain Troy Deeney, the Watford Observer understands.

We understand the Golden Boys have been in talks with Deeney for around two weeks and he is set to sign a new deal.

Sky Sports have reported it will be a four-year contract but we understand it will be a three-year deal.

The 26-year-old has been the subject of several bids from Premier League clubs this summer but the Golden Boys have been reluctant to let their skipper leave.

We reported 11 days ago that the Hornets would not be selling their striker unless an absurd offer was received and we believe they have been in contract talks since around that time.

QPR and Leicester City have had offers of between £6.5m and an initial £10m rejected by Watford this summer.

Prior to those bids, Swansea City and Burnley had offers turned down while Everton and Norwich City were also interested in Deeney in the past.

Last summer Hull City had a bid rejected by the Hornets for last season’s top scorer.

Deeney has scored two goals in four games during this campaign and had netted 45 goals in 91 outings during the previous two seasons.

I was listening to 3 Counties Radio commentary on the Donny game and TD was not evasive but said nothing has changed in the last few weeks and it may stay that way.

Now it seems that means he is not planning on moving unless that ridiculous offer does come in.

Great news (if true). I too heard Troy's commentary on 3CR. In his comments and demeanour, he seemed very committed to the club. Of course that could change by 1 September, if he/we get an offer that is too good to turn down.

Troy offered some insights into the characters in the dressing room, which he conceded were 'too nice' last season. Gomes was mentioned as being vocal and alongside him we have Troy, Tamas and Tozser who appear to be the leaders of the group, 3 of whom were not on the pitch last night.

Not sure why so many minus votes, seems quite a reasonable assumption!!!

We have the most talented squad of players in the Championship at present and yes we sit 2nd, grinding out results great, but playing expansive entertaining football? not so sure at present.

Expectations are rightly very very high and therefore if Sannino does not deliver he will ultimately pay the price. Time will tell.

Deeney is our best player, our most valuable asset, would be impossible to keep if he wanted to leave, our most outspoken in the dressing room yet he wants to stay.

That does not suggest mass dressing room unrest does it Frank?

I noticed the comments re the WO that Troy made last night. Jon Marks, ever the diplomat added that the speculation was reported elsewhere too including 3CR.

There is however a comment on Deeney's twitter stating that he can't remember the last time he spoke to Frank Smith (May 2014 I think was the last printed interview) 'yet there is a new story every week'. while that's Frank's job - using sources etc - speaking to Troy direct might be more enlightening.

The tone of the twitter comment and Troy's off the cuff remark suggests that the relationship between the Captain and the WO is not all it could be.

I would imagine you are in the minority, certainly.

As for Deeney himself, it is true that no man is bigger than the club, but Deeney is a HUGE factor in the soul of this club right now... On and off the pitch. It is he who is the glue, not the head coach. Thankfully he is still Watford. As to the negotiations, and what Nani has brought to the table as a carrot, we can but only speculate... But I doubt it's just a case of a longer contract at more wages.

If his WFC wage packet is about to get a lot fatter then he deserves it. In an amazing squad where there are two or even three choices for every position he is the only one who cant be replaced (Gomes possibly the next). I love his obvious love for the club and his indiscretion. Last night it was like listening to a fan as he praised and moaned about what was happening on the pitch and slagged the ref. One moment he was telling us Pudil was,in his opinion, the outstanding performer so far this season. The next he was calling a fellow striker a fairy for failing to have a shot when reasonably placed. Not very pc but so much better than the clichés most trot out. He cares and I am delighted if this means he is staying to lead the charge.

Is it just me that fears the worst? As much as I want Deeney to stay and take us to the Premiership, I do worry that with this news, the writing is now on the wall. Danny Graham extended his contract in October 2010 to take him to 2012. June 2011 he was sold. The contract extension was purely business so the club got more compensation. Is this what we are seeing here? Will we be going through all this again in the January transfer window?

A fair concern but either way we are still better off, personally I think Troy loves being the main man and realises the grass is not always greener elsewhere. Also he knows that when he was at a low point the club, the pozzo's and the fans stood by him - he has paid us back for that loyalty already but I think he too appreciates loyalty. No one would blame him if he did go though

Will we be going through all this again in the January transfer window?[/p][/quote]A fair concern but either way we are still better off, personally I think Troy loves being the main man and realises the grass is not always greener elsewhere. Also he knows that when he was at a low point the club, the pozzo's and the fans stood by him - he has paid us back for that loyalty already but I think he too appreciates loyalty.

Sannino was a hospital porter, it seems some are using this as some kind of insult..

In my eyes someone who has worked in normal jobs and lived in the real world and understands the difficulties of having little money is more on the wave length of fans who are doing the same thing rather than some rich footballer who then gets a managers job.

I think Sannino is doing a very good job and shows passion.

I'm so tired of reading stupid comments (aka "hospital porter" “happy clapper”) - it’s time that REAL fans get behind the club, manager and team and give them the support (as in “supporters”) that will help us win the division. The Man Utd fans yesterday were still behind their team in what can only be described as one of the most embarrassing games of all times – that’s what it takes to be a Premier league team – if you bush league supporters want to stay in a lower division why don’t you leave and go to your good old friend Luton.

I wonder how many of the Sannino bashers actually have a job, even as a hospital porter? For some of them the school holidays are nearly over, for others out on care in the community they will soon be returned to the psych ward. It is usually those that have low self esteem who are the first to criticise people who have made something of their lives such as Sannino. If this touches a few nerves it is meant to. I respect Troy's low opinion of Frank Smith's and Watford Observers reporting generally. It only appeals to the lowest common denominator. So the reporter who brought us ten articles saying Deeney was leaving now brings us one confirming he is about to sign a new contract. Just do one Frank and take the naysaying numpties with you.

I absolutely agree with you.
Maybe some of the idiots who refer to him as the hospital porter might be grateful one day to someone in that profession
After being a pro footballer the man did a decent down to earth job, good for him. As you say he at least has some idea how normal people live.
Incidentally it seemed to me that Troy seemed supportive of the manager last night, didn't he say the people on the pitch were to blame for the result not the manager.
If we are not in the top four consistently during the next few months it may well be that he will get the push which is fine but it just seems moronic to put him down for doing a hospital porters job.
After all we can't all be as professionally and intellectually gifted as Buckler!
