Billy Jennings was sold to West Ham United for £110,000, almost doubling the club's record received transfer fee and only £5,000 short of the Hammers' own record outlay at the time.

Disgruntled supporters complaining bitterly of an early end to Watford's promotion hopes in the Watford Observer and they were right - Mike Keen's men were relegated to the fourth division at the end of the season.

Keen, however, defended the sale, explaining that Jennings had been promised the option of leaving on receipt of an acceptable offer when an earlier approach from Portsmouth had been rejected.
