A home game with Wrexham saw the Hornets give a debut to Ron Spelman, an outside-right who had faced Watford with his previous club, Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, the previous weekend.
After Ernie Phythian had headed the visitors' opener past Pat Jennings, Spelman took advantage of Dai Ward's cross to open his account.
Charlie Livesey made it 2-1 from long range, before the impressive Spelman crossed for George Harris to head a third.
Livesey converted another Ward cross before half-time, and Billy Myerscough's second-half strike for Wrexham proved academic.
Spelman's performance proved to be the best of his Vicarage Road career.
