Tring Athletic moved up to fourth in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division table after clinching a 2-0 win over Ampthill Town.

Athletic dominated the first half against a Town side bottom of the table following an exodus of last season’s squad and manager Paul Jeffrey.

Stewart King, Kevin McManus and Chris Salmon all had chances for Tring before the deadlock was broken two minutes before half time.

Trevor Gibbs intelligent pass found Chris Vardy 12 yards out and he fired across goal and into the corner.

Athletic began the second period lethargically and Matt Evans was forced to save Tremayne Charles’ near post shot.

However, Tring took control of the half but struggled to create further chances.

In the 81st minute though, Taylor Collins teed up Greg Deer in the penalty area but, before he could shoot, he was fouled.

A penalty was awarded and Gibbs confidently stepped up and converted his spot kick.

A third goal could’ve been added in injury time when Athletic were awarded a second penalty after substitute Daniel Olaloran handled in the box.

Gibbs again stepped up but this time his spot kick was well saved by Tom Gowans in the home goal.
