Tabard got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start as they defeated Old Dunstablians 19-17.

Tabard began the contest on the back foot and came under heavy pressure. Dunstablians couldn’t make their early dominance count but did lead 5-0 at the interval.

After the restart, Dunstablians ran in their second unconverted try of the afternoon. But Tabs replied through Elliott Hurrell with Sam Barrow adding the extras.

Tabard then went in front as replacement Harry Smith showed great pace to run 30 metres and touchdown. The conversion was scored by Barrow and the visitors led 14-10.

Tabs now bristled with confidence and Ronnie Alder crossed for an unconverted try.

Old Dunstablians grabbed a third try, which was converted, but they were unable to overhaul Tabard who held on for victory.

Tabard take on Hitchin in the Herts Tankard on Saturday. Kickoff is at 3pm.

Off the pitch, Tabard have been chosen by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to receive a Transforming Social Spaces Grant ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, which is being staged in England and Wales.

It is hoped the grant will enhance the club’s social facilities and provide a resource to be used by the local community.

Tabard have also received a grant from Hertsmere Borough Council which will further help the project.

Tabs chairman Philip Calnan said: “We will now have some of the best facilities in the area that local people from Watford, Radlett, Borehamwood, Potters Bar and all the surrounding areas can use.

“The 2015 Rugby World Cup will inspire a new wave of people of all ages to become involved in rugby and this RFU investment will help our club to be even better equipped to welcome newcomers.”
