Watford say they reluctantly allowed talented youngster Tom Rosenthal to join SV Zulte Waregem in a permanent deal so he could be near a close family member who is ill in Belgium.

Rosenthal, who is the son of ex-Hornets striker Ronny, was a second-year scholar with the Golden Boys but has joined the Jupiler Pro League club on a two-year contract.

Watford have tonight confirmed they did want to keep the talented attack-minded player, who can play in several positions.

Tom’s father Ronny enjoyed a successful career, which included spells at Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Watford, where he scored 11 goals in 38 outings in all competitions at the end of his career.

The club couldn't do much regarding the Man Utd instance, given recent history a youngster moving to Udinese is more about protection than loss (we are a family of three clubs), and this sounds like an empathetic arrangement, and fair dues if so.

just hope we have something written into the terms that we get first option / sell on fees.
I'm sure that is the case?

Agreed, should have been a loan if that is the reason. Do we get compo or a fee? This lad was supposed to be abit special wasn't he?

Firstly, best wishes to him and his family. I don't doubt that this was probably as hard a decision for him as it was for us, but sometimes, there's more to life than football.

Secondly, I'm sure we would've put a clause in, especially if its being reported that we were reluctant to see him go. Whether we use it or not is another matter...

Hopefully see him again at the Vic.

Agree with comments above - good that we were compassionate but really hope we have a high % sell-on or buy back clause, and don't understand why it couldn't have been a loan.

Don't worry guys like this will jump at the chance of a return to Watford in a year's time. That young lad who went to ManU will bite Nani's hand off for a chance to come back out of obscurity having found his chances even more limited

A lad with great potential. Agree why could we not have loaned while his family problems were ongoing. Still wish you all the best Tom and hope one day to see you play back at the Vic

You must remember he is a young lad and compassion is shown by the club. He was a scholar not a pro so you cant loan a scholar. I am sure there is a verbal agreement between the player and Watford.

Family comes first. My first wife came from a Jewish family and accepted me as non-Jewish. Their family bonds are strong. Shame to see Tom leave WFC but the club has done the right and proper thing by Tom.
