The first meeting with Luton Town for four years, in the first round of the League Cup, was marred by crowd trouble that delayed kick-off by 15 minutes and curtailed plans for a minute's silence marking the recent anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
When the game eventually started, Matthew Spring downed his future employers, opening the scoring with a 30-yard strike before setting up Steve Howard for a second.
Dominic Foley headed a consolation as the Hornets rallied, but the visitors prevailed 2-1.
Twenty jail sentences were subsequently handed out as a consequence of the earlier trouble.
