Oscar Garcia says he wants Troy Deeney to set an example at Watford and says the Hornets captain will help him a lot in the dressing room.

The Spaniard took charge at Vicarage Road last week following the resignation of former head coach Beppe Sannino.

He inherits a side which is second in the Championship table and, in Deeney, has a proven goalscorer in the second tier.

The striker’s future at Watford was speculated over throughout the summer as several bids were made for Deeney from Premier League clubs.

However, the Hornets were determined to keep their captain at the club and turned down several offers, one from Leicester City could have risen to £12 million.

Deeney then signed a new four-year contract with the Golden Boys and Oscar is very pleased the club were able to keep hold of the 26-year-old.

He said at his unveiling: “He’s the captain and I want him to set an example. He knows what the club means and he can help me a lot in the dressing room; he can help me on the pitch and off the pitch. I’m very pleased to have him in the squad."
