Although Bob Peeters claimed he saw neither penalty incident in the first half of Charlton Athletic’s 1-0 win over Watford this afternoon, he admitted the Addicks were “lucky” not to have a spot-kick awarded against them.

Watford Observer:

“I couldn’t see it, it was too far,” said the Charlton head coach of Heurelho Gomes’ foul on Igor Vetokele that led to Yoni Buyens giving his side an early lead. “ I thought at first if he gives it, I thought he was the last man and it’s a red card but the fourth official said to me there was still coverage.

“When they play three at the back we’re going to have some opportunities and the first opportunity we punished them. Ok, maybe, I don’t know – I haven’t seen the images yet – there was a penalty on Deeney as well, but lucky for us he didn’t give that one,” he added on the incident when the Hornets’ skipper seemed to be tripped by Tel Ben Haim as he closed in on goal.

Watford Observer:

Like opposite number Oscar Garcia, Peeters acknowledged the difficulties the international break had given with preparing his side for the match but turning to his side’s performance the Belgian remarked: “We did very well in the first half, didn’t give anything away except for maybe the penalty, possibly the penalty on Deeney. And then we said ‘ok, they are going to come strong second half’. They even replaced, with three at the back, the right [player] at the back for an attacking player [the substitution of Tommie Hoban with Juan Carlos Pardes], so you know at the moment you’re going to have to stand your ground and defend.

“We knew in the last ten minutes we were going to get some possibilities on the break but we didn’t too well there because I think if Igor is fresh, he will finish the game. But I warned my players they’re a very good team, a lot of quality especially up front, so it’s a massive result for us and in the last six minutes in injury time we needed to dig very deep.”
