Watford entertained Everton at Vicarage Road in the first division, looking to turn around a poor start to the season that had seen them concede 35 goals in their first 13 games, winning only one of them.

The match marked the debut of recent signing Tony Coton, whose £300,000 fee had made him the third most expensive goalkeeper in British football history at the time.

Coton went on to win the Player of the Year award three times at Vicarage Road, but his steadying impact was not immediate; after this 5-4 defeat he reportedly confessed to his predecessor as first choice, Steve Sherwood, "I know how you felt".
