Tring Athletic were in ruthless form as they booked their place in the second round of the Challenge Trophy with an emphatic 9-0 victory against Stony Stratford Town on Tuesday.

The scoring started in the sixth minute. Ollie Butler’s neat pass allowed Chris Vardy to advance on goal. He kept his composure to round the keeper and finish.

The chances continued to come. Butler struck the post twice in quick succession before the lead was doubled after Taylor Collins chipped the Stratford goalkeeper.

Tring were four goals ahead by the interval. Vardy curled home a free-kick for his second goal of the evening while Sonny Bailey-Aird converted after poor defending from the home side.

There was no let up from the visitors after the restart. Vardy completed his hat-trick with a clever lob and Keiron Turner then scored direct from a corner.

Three goals in the final ten minutes rounded off the comprehensive victory.

Turner netted twice in quick succession to complete his hat-trick but still had time to add his fourth, and Athletic’s ninth, of the contest to complete the rout. Tring, who are second in the Premier Division, were held to a 1-1 draw at the weekend against Oxhey Jets.

Adam Toone headed home for Athletic but Sim Armstrong’s strike meant the game ended level.

Leverstock Green exited the Challenge Trophy after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Chesham United Reserves on Tuesday.

In Premier Division action on Saturday, Green defeated Colney Heath 5-3.

A goal from Adam Wallace plus braces from Callum Wright and David Sobers secured victory.
