After ending a six-game run of defeats with a 1-0 victory over London Bees last time out, Watford Ladies have the chance to make it back-to-back victories in Women’s Super League 2 when they face Oxford United on Sunday.

The Golden Girls have three league games remaining and are currently sixth in the division.

Earlier in the season, Watford won 2-1 away at Oxford thanks to goals from Jo Wilson and debutant Stacie Donnelly.

The first team were without a fixture at the weekend, although the development team played twice against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Hornets boss John Salomon believes the weekend off will have helped his side.

He said: “Preparation has been very good ahead of the game against Oxford. Having a weekend off has been useful as it has enabled us to get some players closer to full fitness.

“Renee Hector came through 90 minutes for the development team as did a few others and Sasha Adamson, plus Kim Farrow, are closer to a return having picked up knocks against London Bees.”

After victory for the first team against the Bees, and the development side impressing, Salomon admits picking a starting XI against Oxford will be a hard task.

“It’s increasingly difficult to pick the team,” Salomon said. “We have players working their way back in from injuries, but I also attended the two development team games last week and was really impressed with the performances.

“We have a great crop of young players here at the club and those players will start getting opportunities if they continue to progress as they have recently.”

The Golden Girls’ next two league fixtures are at home, something Salomon hopes his players can take advantage of.

He added: “We’re keen to make it back-to-back wins and finish the season strongly. It’ll be a tough game and we’re under no illusions in terms of how hard we will need to work to earn those three points.

“The players are progressing and improving all the time and they will be up for it on Sunday.”

Off the pitch, Hornets duo Hector and Amy Makewell attended the FA Girls’ Football Festival in Cambridge at the weekend.

The event was aimed at increasing and retaining participation in the women’s game.

Hector said: “Events like this are hugely important to the progression of women’s football in this country, the festival gives girls the chance to experience all aspects of football in a relaxed environment.”
