Ikechi Anya played the full 90 minutes as Scotland got their European Championship qualifying campaign up and running with a 1-0 victory over Georgia yesterday.

The Watford wide man was unable to add to his international tally, having scored in the 2-1 defeat to Germany last month, but Gordon Strachan’s side picked up their first win of the campaign thanks to Akaki Khubuti’s first-half own goal.

The victory leaves Scotland fourth in Group D, ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to table-toppers Poland, who claimed a historic 2-0 win over world champions Germany last night.

Daniel Tozser was a 77th-minute substitute as Hungary picked up their first Group F point after coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw in Romania.

The Hungarians were still trailing to Raul Rusescu’s goal from just before half-time when the Hornets midfielder replaced Zoltan Gera with 13 minutes remaining, but Pal Dardai’s side earned a draw through captain Balas Dzsudzsak’s 82nd-minute equaliser.

Hungary, who are fifth of the six teams in their group, are next in action on Tuesday when they travel to basement nation the Faroe Islands.

Meanwhile, Josh Doherty missed a first-half penalty as Northern Ireland Under-19s were beaten 5-2 by Russia in the second match of their European Under-19 Championship qualifying round mini tournament.

Having lost 2-0 against Czech Republic on Thursday, the Northern Irish needed a win to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Doherty’s penalty was awarded three minutes after the Russians had taken the lead from a spot-kick but the eastern Europeans were to be 4-0 up before the host side were to get on the scoresheet, courtesy of a successful penalty from Jordan Thompson.

Joshua Tracey scored the second goal for Northern Ireland, whose qualification group ends against the Faroe Islands on Tuesday.
