Prenton Park was the venue as Watford travelled to Tranmere Rovers; defensive errors contributed to a 3-2 defeat, with the visitors' goals coming from Allan Smart and Gifton Noel-Williams.
The match saw the last outing of the five-man defence that had served the Hornets so well in winning the second division title the previous season; an injury to Keith Millen prior to the following Tuesday's trip to Bolton prompted a move to 4-4-2, a formation that would be retained the rest of the campaign.
The Tranmere defeat proved to be the last of Millen's 191 outings for the club.
