Odion Ighalo says Watford’s players "don't really care"  who the club’s head coach is and believes the Hornets squad is good enough to challenge for promotion no matter who is in charge.

The Golden Boys have changed head coach four times this season. Beppe Sannino, Oscar Garcia and Billy McKinlay have all departed while Slavisa Jokanovic’s reign got off to a winning start at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Much has been made of Watford’s managerial changes this season but, on the pitch, the Hornets have been unaffected and currently lead the Championship.

Ighalo netted the opening goal of Saturday’s 3-0 win at Hillsborough and he said after the victory that any head coach would do well at Vicarage Road this season.

He explained: “We don’t really care about (who) the manager is because we have a good squad – all 25 players.

“We have depth and it’s the team that keeps going. Any manager who comes here should do well because the team is so good.”

When Jokanovic arrived at Watford he stated the side needed to improve their control of matches. He got that against Wednesday.

The Hornets, bar the final minutes, were never truly threatened and looked comfortable throughout the contest.

Former Chelsea midfielder Jokanovic may have only been at the club a couple of weeks, but Ighalo has been impressed.

He explained: “Slavisa is very calm, he’s very technical and he’s very dedicated to his work.

“All the managers we have had are good but you can see we have already put a different style in practice. He’s a good coach.

“We have a good squad and every manager will do well.”

Jokanovic set his side up in an unorthodox 4-1-2-2-1 formation against the Owls. Ighalo led the attack with Matej Vydra and Fernando Forestieri playing slightly deeper than the Nigerian striker.

The trio’s movement caused Wednesday countless problems. Ighalo and Vydra got on the scoresheet while Forestieri struck the post.

“He (Jokanovic) coached us hard in training and we were quite confident. I’m really happy what we worked on in training came true,” the 25-year-old, who joined Watford on loan from Udinese in the summer, said.

“If we keep on getting points then it makes us more confident.

“We’re happy with the win and we have really worked hard to get top of the league. We will not get carried away though.”
