Watford travelled to Somerton Park to face Newport County in the third division (South).
Comley's close-range effort for the home side brought to an end Watford's then-record 728-minute eight-game run without conceding a goal.
The Watford Observer correspondent confessed to a sigh of relief: "The strain of holding that proud defensive record was over and done with, and Watford could settle down to their normal game."
Unforunately, leading 3-1 with 20 minutes to go thanks to two goals from Dave Thomas and one from Johnny Hartburn, the visitors improbably slipped to a 3-3 draw.
