Chairman Elton John issued a joint press release with BPCC, Maxwell Communications' printing subsidiary, announcing the forthcoming transfer of his shares to BPCC in exchange for £2m.
The proposed sale came as Watford struggled at the foot of the first division under Dave Bassett and needed investment to strengthen the side.
The takeover was opposed and eventually blocked by the Football League management committee which objected to Robert Maxwell owning an interest in more than one club, but not before a premature farewell from Elton John had been printed in the Watford programme.
