Watford suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time this season after surrendering a 6-0 lead to lose 7-6 at Saracens Amateurs on Saturday.

After falling to a narrow two-point defeat against London French the previous week, it was a similarly disappointing afternoon for Watford, who were on top at the break.

Having survived an early scare, Watford re-asserted themselves on the game and took control in the scrum, though the same could not be said from the lineout.

Tom McGhee handed Watford the lead with a penalty from 30 metres after the visitors dismantled the Saracens scrum. McGhee then doubled Watford’s advantage with another penalty after the home side strayed offside.

A third penalty five metres from goal was awarded shortly after. However Watford opted for the scrum, only for the referee to penalise the visitors.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Watford dominating the scrum and the Men in Black superior from the lineout.

Sarries took the lead when the ball spilled out the back of another scrum and the hosts’ number nine broke at pace before offloading to a teammate to cross.

McGhee missed another penalty before, with five minutes remaining, Watford lost a lineout which confirmed their defeat.

Watford Seconds slipped to second in the table after losing their unbeaten home record in a 24-15 against UCS Old Boys.
