Hornets legend Nigel Gibbs has turned down the chance to return to Watford's coaching staff in favour of joining Millwall.

Gibbs had agreed in principle to become the Golden Boys' assistant coach and attended their 5-0 win at Fulham alongside owner Gino Pozzo and chief executive Scott Duxbury in the directors' box.

The Watford Observer understand the 49-year-old had been recommended to head coach Slavisa Jokanovic by the club and the pair met early last week.

We understand a few days later Jokanovic asked the club to finalise the agreement but the former Reading coach decided to opt for Millwall instead.

The Lions confirmed Gibbs would work as Ian Holloway's first team coach this morning, with Marc Bircham remaining the Championship club's assistant manager.

It is currently unclear why Gibbs opted for Millwall over a return to the club where he spent the whole of his playing days and the beginning of his coaching career.

We believe Watford remain keen to appoint another British coach to their staff and have already been in discussions with other candidates.
