Watford head coach Slavisa Jokanovic has reiterated his desire to sign an experienced centre-back and midfielder – though they do not have to be British – but does not expect any new additions before Friday’s visit to league-leaders Bournemouth.

The transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday and the Hornets boss has repeatedly outlined his wish to add another experienced centre-half and a midfielder.

The Hornets signed former Crystal Palace midfielder Ben Watson from Wigan Athletic last Friday on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Asked if he was expecting any further additions before facing the Cherries, Jokanovic replied: “No, we have some plans but we can’t be 100 per cent sure.

“I do not make the decisions. We have some plans, now we have a shorter time until the window closes but I am really concentrating now on Friday’s game and this is more important than any other thing.”

He added: “I don’t expect anything. I could be surprised but really I do not expect anyone to arrive before the game.

“We can become a little bit stronger in the next few days. I do not know exactly [if anyone will arrive] but I spoke about this situation many times.

“I am still waiting for some players. I am working with my team; I am thinking about my players.”

It has been suggested by some fans the Hornets need more British players with experience of the Championship, but Jokanovic does not concur.

He said: “It is important they are a good player. It is not important what their passport says. What I mean when I say English spirit is be competitive and strong.

“It is not a question about your passport. If you are going to arrive English or foreign is less important.”

Watford have already seen four players leave Vicarage Road this month, with Lloyd Dyer, Diego Fabbrini and Mathias Ranegie sealing loan moves away, whilst Gabriel Tamas’ contract has been cancelled.

But Jokanovic does not anticipate any more departures before Monday’s deadline.

The Hornets boss said: “I expect I am going to stay with my team complete for the rest of the season. Some rumours always exist.”
