Winning your first professional fight would by most people’s definition be cause for raucous celebration. Not so Dave Abraham, who was in church the day after triumphing in his first bout.

The 29-year-old from Watford made light work of Moses Matovu (5-53-4) at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday night, winning by a unanimous points decision over four rounds against the 38-year-old Ugandan.

For Abraham, who by his own admission would previously have drunk heavily and eaten badly to celebrate a win, his maiden victory as a pro was cause for an all together more understated celebration.

He explained: “I went and sat with my mum and dad after the fight to see the rest of the fight then went home and chilled out. I had church at 10.30 the next day and I was in training again on the Monday.

“This week is my week off but I am still training at least once a day. I am still active.”

Abraham has previously told of how what was meant to have been a lads’ holiday to Las Vegas changed his life and the former lifeguard believes his lifestyle alteration has not only had a positive impact on him in the ring.

“You spend so much time training you appreciate the little things; hanging out with your mates and playing FIFA or going out for a meal at a restaurant,” he explained. “People kind of give me their best, they want to tell me the best things going on in their lives and that is something I live with every day now.

“Having my faith has played a major role on the way I live my life and it has affected my boxing. I believe God has taken that desire to drink and eat to excess away from me in order to box.”

It was a routine win for the 6ft 6in heavyweight, who was always in control against cruiserweight Matovu.

“He didn’t actually even land a punch,” admitted Abraham. “I eliminated his offence to maximise mine and it all went to plan.

“He is a tricky guy who knows how to survive and I saw that survival instinct kick in in the middle of the ring. I think he came out to fight but when a guy like me is facing you, it is intimidating.”

Next up on Abraham’s schedule is a fellow Steve Goodwin-managed fighter in 36-year-old Larry Olubamiwo (10-11). The 6ft 4in ‘War Machine’ from Lambeth will meet Abraham at York Hall on June 13 and he is relishing the prospect of a sterner test.

“It is definitely a step up,” he acknowledged. “A proper heavyweight. Although he was game, the guy before was a cruiserweight. You really want to see me up against a proper heavyweight.”
