EDINBURGH Rugby owner Bob Carruthers has urged the SRU to avoid a legal battle over funding.

The row has simmered for weeks now, with SRU chief Gordon McKie rejecting an offer of mediation from Carruthers, who contends the union owe his club £250,000 in unpaid Heineken Cup and Magners League fees.

He has sought to involve members of the Scottish Rugby Council - which incorporates various representatives of the game from the Premiership to schools rugby, and is chaired by SRU president George Jack - in calling McKie and the SRU to account.

A club statement said: "We understand no members of the SRC, and only a few members of the SRU board, have seen the agreements between Edinburgh and SRU which are the subject of the dispute.

"Edinburgh Rugby calls upon the SRC to review the position of the SRU executive, and persuade them to go to mediation in the interests of rugby in Scotland."
