THE Scottish Executive has been called on to build 30,000 new houses over the next three years.
The call came from the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) at a conference attended by communities minister Stewart Maxwell.
He told the audience that housing was a key priority for ministers but CIH director Alan Ferguson said action was needed on the issue.
He said: "The Executive has to commit to the building of 30,000 affordable rented homes over the next three years for those in need and to address a backlog."
Availability of mid-rent options was identified as a priority as well as the creation of mixed neighbourhoods where privately-owned houses sit alongside rented homes.
A Housing Supply Task Force, chaired by the minister, will meet next month to tackle the obstacles such as land supply and planning issues, which have hampered the delivery of more homes.
Mr Maxwell said: "The issue of housing is at the forefront of the government's agenda."
