MOTHERWELL boss Mark McGhee has threatened to wield the axe on the side that sneaked an opening day victory at St Mirren.

McGhee's reign as Well boss got off to a winning start when his team recorded a 1-0 victory.

However, the former Aberdeen, Celtic and Scotland star is still desperately trying to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes.

And he has told the likes of Martyn Corrigan, Brian McLean, Trevor Molloy and Simon Mensing, who all started on the bench last week, they are part of his plans.

Mark confirmed: "I will be looking at how those who have been left out the side react to it. It will be a real test of their character.

"I am very limited in what I can do here as I can only pick 11 players each week. But I really can't afford to show any sentiment at all.

"It certainly won't be the same 11 players who play every week. Therefore, those who are left out one week need to be ready when called upon."

McGhee could have former Rangers striker Ross McCormack, who missed the clash with the Saints because of an injured elbow, available again.

Assistant manager Scott Leitch said: "We have virtually a full squad to choose from, but we will need to wait and see how Ross is."

Leitch, though, has been delighted with how new signing Chris Porter performed alongside David Clarkson and Steven McGarry in attack.

He added: "Chris is a good guy and has settled into the squad well. He had an excellent game last week.

"This will be a difficult match for us against Inverness at Fir Park tomorrow. We have struggled against Caley Thistle at home in recent seasons.

"However, records are there to be broken and we can win this match."
