JAMES McCARTHY today claimed he is focusing fully on helping Hamilton make their mark in the SPL again next season.

This is the situation despite interest from Barclays Premier League new boys Burnley.

Turf Moor boss Owen Coyle, who has just signed Scotland striker Steven Fletcher from Hibs, has tabled a bid for the SFWA Young Player of the Year.

His offer did not meet the New Douglas Park club's valuation of Scottish football's hottest young property.

However, Coyle is expected to come back with more money.

McCarthy says he is only concerned with helping Billy Reid's side improve on their performances in the top flight during the 2009-10 campaign.

He said: "Me, Brian Easton and James McArthur gained a lot of experience from playing in the SPL last season.

"We stayed in the team and were happy with how we did.

"I know the gaffer is looking to strengthen the squad and I think we could do well next season if he does that and he keeps all of his other top players.

"But we can't get carried away with last season.

"We have to get our heads down and work hard in pre-season.

"I am sure we can stay in the SPL next season but, hopefully, we can finish as high as possible."

Meanwhile, McCarthy's team-mate McArthur, a signing target for Rangers last season, is keen to do better in the forthcoming campaign.

He said: "I could have had a better season if I am being honest.

"My consistency could have been a bit better and I need to add goals.

"I only scored two last season. That's not enough.

"Hopefully, my luck will change with regards to goals, but I am hoping for a better season.

"I was happy with a lot of what I did, but I set the bar quite high."
