Sir Alex Ferguson

Tommy was a talented player.

He was such a nice, quiet guy off the pitch. But he had a bit of fire about him.

He was red-haired, and you expect those with red hair to have a bit of fire - players like Billy Bremner and Jimmy Johnstone.

Tommy had a bit of fire, but he was a beautiful, educated footballer in terms of his left foot.

He was always worth a goal. When we used to play against Celtic I used to say to the players all of the time Watch him coming late into the box.' He was good at that.

He was a competitive wee lad. I think her got sent off against us at Pittodrie once. When you look at the careers of players you know they can't be an angel all of the time.

I am doing the foreword for Willie Johnston's book and I make that point.

But you can't use one blip in a person's football career because you have to you would have to examine every tackle made and every bad deed ever done on a football pitch. What you can talk about is what the player contributed to the game in general.

The excitement Tommy brought to a Celtic fan - and not just for a minute or two, but for more than a decade - has to be acknowledged.

Tommy Gemmell

He was a tremendous player and a great manager. And a great person.

I don't think you will find anyone on this earth who will say a bad word about him.

Graeme Murty signed by Burns in 1998 He was such a genuine person and was always the same through good times and bad times. He never felt the need to change and that gave me an indication of how I wanted to live my life.

Alex McLeish

He was a fantastically humble guy, never forgot his roots. Tommy Burns was a genuine human being and a fantastic player, a fantastic coach, a Celtic legend, and he'll be sadly missed.

Ally McCoist

It had obviously been an emotional night on Wednesday and I got a call just before eight in the morning to tell me that Tommy had passed away.

I was absolutely distraught. I don't mind saying that there was a tear in my eye.

I loved Tommy. We all did. It's hard to think of anything else right now.

Fergus McCann

I am deeply saddened to hear of Tommy's death. I pray for the repose of his soul and for strength for his wife Rosemary and their children.

Tommy had a fine career and every Celtic supporter and Scottish football fan will have their own special memories of a man whose life was dedicated to his family, the game of football and, in particular, to Celtic Football Club. Those memories will live on.

Henrik Larsson

Tommy wasn't just a great player and a great coach, he was a really wonderful man. He loved Celtic deeply. But more than anything he cared about people.

Along with everyone who knew him, I have been left with some great memories of him.

As far as football was concerned, he was very knowledgable about the game and always wanted it to be played positively and in an entertaining way.

His heart was totally at Celtic and he would have done anything for the club.

Motherwell club statement

Motherwell FC have been all too familiar with grief in recent times and received help from all quarters, including immeasurable support from Celtic and indeed, Tommy Burns himself.

Lex Gold SPL Chief

Tommy was a fine human being whose selfless qualities earned him respect throughout football. He will be sorely missed by all. He made a massive contribution to the game as a player, manager and coach for club and country, but whether in victory or defeat, he always maintained a great dignity.
