A TEENAGER has died after he was struck by a car on a busy carriageway.

The 17-year-old was crossing the A80 in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, when he was hit by a Renault Laguna which was travelling towards Glasgow.

The accident happened near to the Auchinkilns interchange at around 11.50pm on Saturday night. The man, who has not yet been named, died at the scene.

Police enquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.

The westbound carriageway of the A80 was closed for five hours after the accident.

Meanwhile, a motorcylist is seriously ill in hospital after he was hit by a car in Gourock.

The 32-year-old man was travelling on Cloch Road at around 1.10pm on Friday when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle overtaking a cyclist.

The biker lost control and came off the carriageway. He was taken by air ambulance to the Southern General and is in critical condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.. Constable Gary McKenzie said: "I appeal to any witnesses to the incident, in particular the cyclist, as he may have information that is vital."
