KRIS BOYD has already set himself a target of 100 goals at Rangers after passing the half-century this week.

The 24-year-old striker netted goals 50 and 51 in the 4-0 CIS Insurance Cup third round win over East Fife.

He became the second-fastest player in the history of the club to reach that landmark, second only to 1960s strike star Jim Forrest.

But the hitman will not rest on his laurels despite an astonishing 51 goals in 60 starts since joining from Kilmarnock in January 2006 for £400,000.

Boyd revealed: "To get through 50 goals so quickly was pleasing. But I want to go and build on that now. My next target is 100 goals and hopefully I can get that soon as well.

"Hopefully I can get the chance to continue my scoring form this weekend. It would be great if I could finish off the week with a goal at Motherwell.

"It's the same for every striker - when you get in you want to score. I'm no different. I want to keep going in the way I have done over the past few weeks. Tomorrow, if a chance comes, I want to take it."

Boyd said events at East End Park were made all the sweeter after he was made captain for the night by manager Walter Smith.

"When the gaffer told me I'd be captain I was obviously delighted. It's a big honour to captain Rangers," he said.

"I was more pleased, though, with how the team played and making sure we got into the next round."

The Scotland man is likely to start against Motherwell in the SPL crunch at Fir Park. But he admits the battle for striking berths means sloppy performances will see you dumped.

Boyd added: "I think we are getting used to it (rotation). You'll play in some games, but not in others. But everything is being done here for the benefit of the team, and that's the most important thing.

"I said way back in the summer that the more players we get the better. Competition brings out the best in people, and there is no doubt it's fierce here.

"It's up to whoever gets the nod to go out and do well - if you don't, there are other strikers waiting there to come in."

Meantime, Rangers' Champions League opponents next week, Lyon, are hopeful that Sidney Govou and Francois Clerc will be fit for the crucial clash.

Both have minor injuries and boss Alain Perrin is set to take no risks and leave them out of the game with Lens tomorrow.

Barcelona skipper Carles Puyol played a reserve game and is on course to face Rangers on October 23 at Ibrox.

But Italian full-back Gianluca Zambrotta tore a thigh muscle in Wednesday's win over Zaragoza and is out for a month. He will be touch and go for Ibrox.

Uefa have fined Zeta £9000 for their fans' racist chants and missile throwing against Rangers in Montenegro.
