ASDA has banned sales of monkfish from its stores after concern the species could disappear from UK waters.

The supermarket - which has 37 stores in Scotland - said the move followed a plea from Greenpeace to save the monkfish, which was once common in waters off Britain.

Greenpeace hailed the move and called on other supermarkets to follow Asda's lead.

It also urged leading chefs such as Rick Stein, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, to remove monkfish from menus.

Asda is the only major supermarket to have taken the decision to ban monkfish.

Despite its ugly appearance - its head is one third the size of its body - monkfish has become popular because of its firm white flesh.

It's still a favourite dish on the menus of top restaurants.
