A POLICE safety crackdown caught 123 speeding drivers and 171 people not wearing seatbelts in just a day.

In Strathclyde's safety campaign, earlier this week, a 20-year-old man was caught driving at 84mph in a 50 zone.

He was spotted speeding along a stretch of the A725 near Peel Park in East Kilbride.

In another incident a 26-year-old man stopped in the East End of Glasgow doing 66mph in a 40 zone was found to have stolen the car.

The man tried to give police false details, then it emerged he was driving the vehicle without the owner's consent.

The campaign, over a 24-hour period on Tuesday, was the latest co-ordinated "day of action" by forces across the country arranged by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland.

Chief Inspector Paul Fleming, from Strathclyde Police's road policing department, said: "Speed plays a major factor in many serious injury and road death collisions, yet officers continue to find significant numbers of speeding motorists prepared to place themselves and others at risk by their selfish actions.

"It is also of major concern that a significant number of vehicle occupants choose to travel whilst not protected by a seat belt.

"They have nothing to gain and everything, especially their lives, to lose. The message I would like to get across is to think about the consequences for yourself and others, and don't risk it."
