DRIVERS don't realise that male motorists are responsible for most dangerous driving deaths.

A survey shows that 84% underestimate the proportion of such deaths caused by men, with 43% believing that men and women are equally dangerous.

More than half, 54%, do not believe that men are more dangerous drivers.

But in reality, 94% of causing death by dangerous driving convictions are against men, according to research by road safety charity Brake and breakdown service Green Flag.

Jools Townsend, head of education at Brake, said: "While there are good and bad drivers of both genders, male drivers are much more likely to cause death on the road - and to be killed themselves.

"All drivers, but men in particular, need to make a conscious effort to take fewer risks."

Nigel Charlesworth of Green Flag said: "Men in particular need to take the risk element out of their driving."
