Kings Langley are on the verge of winning the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division title and the club have ensured they will be able to enter either the Southern Football League or the Isthmian League next season.

Kings currently have a 16-point lead over second-placed side London Colney in the Premier Division. And with only seven matches of the season remaining it is only a matter of time until they are crowned champions and seal promotion.

Off the pitch the club have been busy making sure their Gaywood Park ground meets the required standard to host matches in step four of England’s national league system.

On Tuesday Kings passed their FA ground grading and joint manager Paul Hughes is excited about what the future holds for the club.

“We have had a fantastic season,” he said. “To be honest we are still a little bit surprised with how well we have done.

“To come up from Division One and to go straight up again would be a credit to everyone at the club. The players’ attitude has been spot on from day one.

“Even at this stage of the season everyone commends their work ethic, no team works harder than we do during matches.

“What has also helped us is that the players really like each other and that is something you can’t coach.

“From the chairman down to the management and the players, everyone has a great relationship and that is difficult to find at any club.

“I don’t want to say we are there yet because we still need around eight points I think. We still need to get over the line.

“But it will be an incredible achievement for the club and I am excited about what we are doing here.”

Kings have won their last six league matches and produced an excellent comeback to defeat local rivals Berkhamsted 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Josh Chamberlain had fired Berko in front after 55 minutes but Langley turned on the style and soon equalised through Luke Ladyman.

Lewis Toomey then turned in Ollie Cox’s shot to put Kings in front before goals from Stuart Deaton and Mitchell Weiss completed the turnaround.

Three days earlier, an Alex Campana free-kick helped Hughes and Ritchie Hanlon’s side defeat Wembley 1-0.

Given their impressive rise in the past two seasons Kings’ players have inevitably been offered moves up the football pyramid.

But Hughes says the desire to remain at the club has outweighed any offer they have received to more away.

“We have had approaches for players throughout the season but they haven’t wanted to go,” the joint boss said.

“At this level the money they will be offered will only be a few quid and that isn’t enough for them to move away from somewhere that they are enjoying their football.

“If they were being offered thousands of pounds it may be a bit different.

“But next season we may have to get some lads tied down to contracts in order to stop other clubs easily taking them away from us.”

Hughes added: “For Ritchie (Hanlon) and myself this has been a case of getting our club up the divisions. We both live only a couple of minutes away from the ground and we have had a fantastic time with the club.

“If another club approached us then we would politely listen but Kings is our club and we are very happy here.”
