Oxhey Jets boss Wayne Gladdy accepts his side must focus on cup competitions if they are to avoid another season petering out into mid-table mediocrity.

The Jets are currently 12th in the Premier Division standings, long since safe from the threat of relegation but also out of contention for the upper echelons of the table.

Beaten 3-1 at Hadley on Tuesday and 3-0 at Stofold on Saturday, Gladdy admits it has been a disappointingly low-key end to the season for his side as they battle with a crippling injury list.

He said: “We are looking round and thinking we are looking forward to the summer. There are a lot of people struggling, to the point I could not name my squad right now if you asked me to.

“It is a day-to-day thing at the moment, texting around asking people to let us know if they will be available for the weekend.

“I have [already begun thinking about next season] and we have a few different ideas and priorities for next year. This season has petered out to nothing and it has been quite disappointing.

“We are now at the stage where we are probably too strong to worry about the relegation battle but not strong enough to go up. So we are looking at the cups so the lads have got something to look forward to at the end of the season.

“I would rather not see an end like this again.”

Lee Armitt scored Jets’ consolation against Hadley, having been benched at the weekend, and is now six clear of Berkhamsted’s BJ Christie, with 33 league goals, in the race for the golden boot.

Sun Postal can still finish third but know the outcome of their tussle with current incumbents AFC Dunstable will decide that battle.

A 2-0 loss to London Colney on Saturday saw Paul Hobbs’ side fall to fourth, a point behind the Bedfordshire outfit, who also have a game in hand.

Tuesday saw Sun miss out on the chance to compete for silverware as they exited the St Mary’s Cup at the hands of Tring Athletic.

Sun Sports’ Reserves won the Hertfordshire Intermediate County Cup on Wednesday evening by beating St Margaretsbury 3-1.

Goals from Ryan Luke, Curtis Donaldson and Steve Noonan sealed the win for Sun’s second string.

Watford Observer:

Berkhamsted could still finish as high as third after they hit nine goals and claimed two wins in four days.

Tuesday’s 3-1 victory at London Tigers was enough to move Mick Vipond’s side into sixth place – a leap of two places.

The opening goal was spectacular. Josh Chamberlain displaying the vision and presence of mind to look up, spot Tigers goalkeeper Arlys Pampolin off his line and lob the Brazilian gloveman from inside his own half.

Berko ought to have built on that stunning effort before they eventually did, Christie shooting under Pampolin after the break to double the visitors’ advantage.

And although London Tigers got one back with 15 minutes remaining, it was Christie who completed the scoring by notching his 36th of a prolific season in all competitions.

On Saturday the Comrades had thumped hapless Ampthill Town 6-0 at Broadwater, with Christie hitting a hat-trick.

There was also a brace for Chamberlain, with one coming from the penalty spot, whilst Adiel Mannion got in on the act to give Berko a 4-0 half-time lead.

Tring Athletic have reached the final of the St Mary’s Cup after brushing aside Premier Division rivals Sun Sports 3-0 on Tuesday.

Either Leverstock Green or Hemel Hempstead Town await in the final. They meet at Pancake Lane on Tuesday.

It was Tring’s first win against Sun this season in three attempts and also the first time Julian Robinson’s men have netted against their fellow Premier Division side.

Chris Vardy opened the scoring 11 minutes before the break when he met Sam Joliffe’s pass before lobbing Sun stopper Ross Hampton.

And Vardy moved to within one strike of 30 for the season when he nudged home Lee Stobbs’ cross with ten minutes remaining.

Tring completed the job at the death when youngster Luke Dunstan rifled home in injury time.

On Saturday Tring came from behind to pick up a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Wembley.

Behind after just four minutes, the home side battled back and levelled after ten second-half minutes when Ollie Hogg shot into the top corner.

Leverstock Green picked up back-to-back league wins for the first time since January as they crushed Hoddesdon Town 5-2 on Saturday.

It did not start well for Dene Gardner’s side, who were 2-0 down before Louis Bircham scored the first of three on half time.

But an inspired second-half showing saw Bircham (2), Luke Warner-Eley and Callum Wright turn the tie in Levy’s favour.
