Steven Finn has been named in England’s 13-man squad for the first Ashes Test in Cardiff next week.

The Watford-born fast bowler has been a regular part of England's one-day side over the past 12 months but has not played a Test match for almost two years, having last featured in England's first Test victory over Australia at Trent Bridge in July 2013.

If the former Parmiter's School does make the final 11 for the opening match of the five-Test series at the Swalec Stadium, which gets underway on Wednesday, it would represent a signifcant personal achievement for the Middlesex bowler, who was sent home early from England's 5-0 drubbing down under in 2014 after been deemed 'unselectable'.

Having made his Test debut in 2010, Finn has made 23 Test appearances to date, four of them coming against Australia against whom he has taken 16 wickets.

Commenting on the 13 players named, national selector James Whitaker told the ECB website: “There are no huge surprises in the squad. Adil Rashid’s inclusion provides Alastair (Cook) and [new England coach] Trevor (Bayliss) with plenty of bowling options and the surface at Cardiff will dictate who makes the final XI.

“Within the squad there are players who have plenty of experience of Ashes cricket and that knowledge will I’m sure be useful for the players who are yet to experience a home Ashes series.

“There has been some very good cricket played so far this summer and we are aware that we will need to build on that over the next seven weeks if we are to win back the Ashes.

“On behalf of the selectors I’d like to congratulate the 13 players selected for the first Investec Test and wish them as well as Trevor all the very best for what will I’m sure be a very competitive and entertaining series.”

The full England first Test squad is: Alastair Cook (Essex (captain)); Moeen Ali (Worcestershire); James Anderson (Lancashire); Gary Ballance (Yorkshire); Ian Bell (Warwickshire); Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire); Jos Buttler (Lancashire); Steven Finn (Middlesex); Adam Lyth (Yorkshire); Adil Rashid (Yorkshire); Joe Root (Yorkshire); Ben Stokes (Durham); Mark Wood (Durham).
