Davidstow Village Cup

Langleybury are into the last 16 of the National Village Cup after a dramatic five-wicket win over Buckinghamshire side Dinton on Sunday.

Hosts Dinton won the toss and opted to bat on an overcast day. But they were afforded little time to settle as Andrew Cheeseman (one for 21) and Habib Alam (two for 26) snared the early wickets of both openers for ducks.

Alister Gibbons (35) laid on some runs at number three but he was lost to Luke Samarasinghe (two for 25) before he could build any real momentum at the crease.

In the middle order, Philip Arnold (52 not out), Henry Woodward (23) and Neil Roberts (25) put together some runs before Ross Channer (two for 35) helped Samarasinghe alleviate those threats.

Steve Carter took one for 27 as Dinton closed on 182 for nine.

Openers Mohammed Manzoor (22) and Will Oxley (62) got Langleybury off on a sure footing in reply before Nahim Amin (63 not out) got in on the act at number three.

Amin went through several partners at the crease, eventually helping steer Langleybury to the necessary 183 for five with just four balls remaining, sealing his side’s place in round six.

Their reward is a home tie against Foxton on Sunday, July 12. Langleybury reached the final of the competition in 1996 and will be bidding to return to Lord’s once more when they host the Cambridgeshire side at Hunton Bridge.
