An informal conversation has taken place between the Hornets and Harry Kewell over the possibility of him becoming the club’s Under-21 coach, the Watford Observer understands.

The Daily Mail is reporting the Vicarage Road side are hoping to appoint the former Leeds United and Liverpool player as the coach of their Under-21 side. We understand an informal discussion between the parties has taken place but there is some distance to go before any potential agreement may be reached.

The Golden Boys will be competing in the Under-21 Premier League next season after confirming yesterday their application to upgrade to Category Two Academy status had been approved.

Having retired from playing with Melbourne Heart in the A-League last year, the 36-year-old has set up a youth academy in his native Australia but is said to be keen on a return to England to establish his coaching career.

Liverpool have also reportedly shown an interest in tempting Kewell back to the club who helped win the Champions League in 2005 as part of their youth set-up.

The Sydney-born player spent eight years at Leeds, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2000 and helping the Elland Road outfit to the Champions League semi-finals the following season. He moved to Liverpool in 2003 and spent five years at Anfield before a three-year stint in Turkey with Galatasaray followed.
