Kyle Langford has made it a golden double this month by adding the European Junior 800m title to his British senior crown in Sweden this afternoon.

The 19-year-old Watford athlete (1.48.99) held off fast-finishing Konstantin Tolokonnikov (1.49.00) to win the championship in Eskilstuna, with Poland’s Meteusz Borkowski (1.49.21) back in third.

Having won his heat and semi-final, the Shafestbury Barnet Harrier had looked in fine form coming into the final and he underlined the confidence with which he’s been running with a composed display when the pressure was applied.

In fourth place coming around the penultimate bend, Langford made his first move down the back straight to improve his track position. He then moved up into second with just under 200m to go, only to be almost immediately passed by Borkowski. Crucially though, the Garston resident remained composed and backed his strength and ability to carry him to victory in the home straight.

Langford stayed on Borkowski’s shoulder as the race entered the final 100m, passed him with around 30m to go and held his form through the line to hold off the late surge of Tolokonnikov.

Having become the first junior to win the British title since Steve Ovett in Birmingham earlier this month, Langford’s next goal is to achieve the 1.46.00 mark he needs to qualify for next month’s World Championships in China.

The talented athlete will be hoping to achieve this on Saturday as he is set to compete at the Anniversary Games in the Olympic Stadium where the field is also due to include London 2012 champion David Rudisha, who broke the world record to win gold, and Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos.
